Coverdale: How the Story Came to Life

A Blog by Charles Fulmer

I have written quite a few stories in my journey as a writer, starting of as mostly shorter stories that were typically around 40-60 pages long, with one of my longer works, finished in 2012, called, “Centennia: World of Darkness,” still only being around 80 pages in length.

After finishing “Centennia,” I decided to make the attempt to write a novel that would be of a longer length.  Then in 2013, at the height of the popularity of the Disney movie, “Frozen,” and with my love for the “Super Mario” Franchise from Nintendo, I decided to write a Nintendo/Disney action/adventure crossover, originally called “The Nintendo Revolution,” which saw a group of heroes, led by Queen Elsa, defending the World of “Nintendia” against an evil tyrant who was destined to rule the world on her own terms.

I finished the story in the Winter of 2014, with the story have a length of over 240 pages, the longest novel I had ever written.  I was proud of myself for being able to accomplish writing something of a longer length.

But in the Summer of 2018, I even was getting the idea that I would someday like to have my story published for the world to read, and upon reviewing “The Nintendo Revolution,” I thought about what I could do to make the story one that had my own developed characters and worlds, worried about having problems with copyrighted worlds and characters from Nintendo and Disney.

I therefore began the long task of changing worlds and characters in the story.  While I was able to get the worlds and characters established, I was having trouble figuring out a title for the story, or a good name for the world the characters lived in.

How I came up with the title was a funny one.  When I was a delivery driver for a tire company, in one of the businesses I was making a delivery for, one of the roads I had to travel on was Coverdale Road.  For some reason, as I was thinking about my story one day, I saw the street sign and decided Coverdale would be a good name for the world I had developed, and thus came up with the title, “The Chronicles of Coverdale” came to be.

Readers of “The Chronicles of Coverdale” may still see some sense that the story was written based from Nintendo and Disney.  Even so, it’s the story that kickstarted my journey in to writing longer novels, and is a story I really enjoyed writing and am very proud of.
