Journey of a Writer

A Blog By Charles Fulmer

Being a writer is an interesting journey one can decide to take.  There are different reasons people decide to choose the path to writing.  For me, it was a simple hobby I always enjoyed, as a way to get away for the stresses and demands of life, and to be able to see myself living in the worlds I wrote about.

I could see myself having a future in writing even back to my junior high and high school days, when a teacher would give us writing assignments, wanting just a one-to-two-page essay about a certain topic, and I would end up writing about a topic as a short story.  I’m certain the teacher would be a bit annoyed at the times where we were to read the essays in front of the class, and simply reading mine would take up half the class time, and then the teacher would have to take an extra day for the students to present their essays.

My first short novel I wrote was inspired by when I helped coach my little sister’s softball league, a story I simply called, “The Browns,” named after her softball team, which was sponsored by Brown Funeral Home.  I finished the story all the way back in 1997.  The story was a fictional depiction of the team’s journey towards getting to the championship.

I originally had myself as a character in the story, along with some of the players, but when I revised the story back in 2016, I changed it to have fictional characters, and turned it into the story it is today, called “Carl and the Browns,” which is part of the upcoming book, “The Sports Series.”

Over the years, I also engaged in writing many short stories that were typically only forty to seventy pages long.  But I felt if I wanted to be successful in the world of writing, I would need to attempt making longer novels, and my first attempt at writing a novel came in 2012, with writing “The Chronicles of Coverdale.”

Stories can typically take me a little while to write because with working a full-time job, I typically only get to write during the weekends, but I find writing to be a nice and relaxing hobby that lets me use my imagination in ways I never thought would have been possible.  And it’s a joy to be able to share my hobby with the world, and allow readers to also dive into the different worlds and meet the unique characters I have put in my stories.

Overall, I find my writing journey to be a very rewarding experience, and have even amazed myself in the ideas I have come up with.  And while I’m no Steven King or Agatha Christie, I certainly hope that my stories can put smiles on people’s faces.
